Every morning after Fajr, the MILA Retreat group sets out into Plaza Blanca, affectionately called the “White Place,” located next to the Dar al‑Islam campus. This 2.8‑mile out‑and‑back hike winds through surreal white sandstone spires and hoodoos, dramatic volcanic ash formations carved by wind and rain, bathed in the soft, early‑morning light.

We offer two distinct hikes into the stunning landscape of Plaza Blanca:

• The Canyon Hike leads participants through the heart of Plaza Blanca, weaving between towering white sandstone formations and sculpted hoodoos. This path is peaceful and grounding, surrounded by high canyon walls that create a sense of seclusion and reflection, perfect for quiet dhikr remembering and glorifying Allah for His flawless creation.
• The Overlook Hike takes a more elevated route, gradually climbing to a scenic lookout point above the canyon. From the top, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of the entire valley below, the Dar al-Islam mosque in the distance, and the surrounding high desert landscape, an awe-inspiring perspective that invites gratitude to Allah for everything.
